A New Chapter for Australian Motorcycle Racing as Victoria Bows Out
End of an Era for Phillip Island
MotoGP’s long association with Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit appears to be drawing to a close, with South Australia emerging as the frontrunner to host the Australian Grand Prix from 2027 onwards. For months, speculation surrounded the event’s future. The Victorian Government explored the possibility of shifting the race to Melbourne’s Albert Park Circuit, home of Formula 1’s Australian Grand Prix. However, the proposal was ultimately rejected, with state officials insisting they would increase financial backing only if the event remained at Phillip Island.
Without support for a city-based relocation, negotiations between MotoGP’s commercial rights holders and the Victorian Government deteriorated, paving the way for a move interstate.
South Australia’s Ambitious Play
All indications now point towards The Bend Motorsport Park as the championship’s new Australian venue. Located just over an hour from Adelaide, The Bend boasts FIA Grade 2 and FIM Grade A-standard facilities, making it capable of hosting premier-level international motorsport.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has made no secret of his desire to secure major sporting events for the state. Under his leadership, Adelaide has already landed the AFL’s Gather Round and a LIV Golf tournament. While publicly cautious about engaging in a bidding war, MotoGP appears close to completing a deal behind the scenes, with an official announcement expected imminently. There had been outside speculation about a return to Adelaide’s street circuit, but adapting a temporary layout to meet modern MotoGP safety regulations, particularly regarding run-off areas and barriers, would pose significant logistical challenges.
Phillip Island has been a constant on the MotoGP calendar since 1997 and is widely regarded by riders as one of the most exhilarating circuits in the championship. Its high-speed, flowing layout and dramatic coastal backdrop have made it a fan favourite.
However, the venue has faced challenges. The October timeslot often brings unpredictable weather and strong winds, which can affect attendance and on-track conditions. Despite this, the 2025 event attracted approximately 91,000 spectators over the weekend and is estimated to generate more than $54 million annually for Victoria’s economy.
Should the move be finalised, the 2026 race, scheduled for October 23–25, would be the final MotoGP event at Phillip Island. While Victoria will continue hosting Formula 1 in Melbourne, the departure of MotoGP signals the end of a significant chapter in Australian motorsport history.
