It is a first stint away from Old Trafford for Stockport-born Wheatley, a graduate of United’s youth academy who was handed his first-team debut against Sheffield United back in April and made three substitute appearances in the Premier League towards the end of last season under Erik ten Hag, including against Arsenal.
